Around three quarters of the young people in custody in Queensland Youth Detention Centres are on remand - the outcome of a dramatic upward trend over recent years. This is often caused by the young people not having appropriate accomodation options to satisfy the court.

Attorney-General Paul Lucas said he would introduce laws to enforce mandatory minimum parole periods for imprisonment. The Sentencing Advisory Council, a body established by the Queensland Government to look at sentencing, ‘thinks the idea of mandatory minimum terms of imprisonment is dumb’.

The prison suicide of an Indigenous woman has prompted the coroner to call for a widespread reform. The Queensland coroner, David Mark says 'urgent changes are needed in prisons, following the suicide of a female inmate'.
