It has been a shocking start to the year with several incidents of police violence directed towards Indigenous Australians and deaths in custody. The Indigenous Social Justice Association in Melbourne has declared 2012 a year of escalated action to stop Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths in custody.

Job seeking, among other issues, can be a major obstacle for people who have a criminal record. The Commission has received 68 complaints over the recent years from people reporting employment discrimination due to their criminal record. The complaints received by the Commission indicates that discrimination against people with a criminal record is greatly misunderstood by both employers and those with the criminal record.

Queensland is the only state that still locks up 17 year olds in adult prisons. 20 years ago the Government promised to stop this practice, yet it still continues.
