On January 29, 21-year-old father Noa Begic was arrested and taken to the Surfers Paradise police station where police repeatedly punched him and slammed Mr Begic face-first in to the ground.

Each year around 700 young people are detained in Queensland's youth detention centres (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2011). A survey was conducted in 2011, View's of Young People in Detention Centres', providing an opportunity for young people in Queensland's youth detention centres to share their experiences of detention and the youth justice system, particularly on matters regarding their safety and well-being.

Victoria's crime rate has been falling over the decade yet the Victorian jails are at capacity and the growth is predicted to continue to rise at a rapid rate. The recent Victorian Justice Department report acknowledged that harsher sentencing policies, not increase in crime rates will be the 'main driver of growth in prison bed demand'.

Around three quarters of the young people in custody in Queensland Youth Detention Centres are on remand - the outcome of a dramatic upward trend over recent years. This is often caused by the young people not having appropriate accomodation options to satisfy the court.
